How to Spot a Rogue Trader (and What to Do)

Most UK tradespeople are honest. But rogue traders cost UK homeowners over £200 million a year — and the elderly are disproportionately targeted.

Warning signs

  • Cold-call, door-knock, or pressure tactics (“I noticed your roof from the road…”)
  • Cash only, no written quote, no VAT receipt
  • Sudden price increases mid-job
  • No fixed business address, mobile-only contact
  • Refuses to give insurance, accreditation, or references
  • Asks for big upfront deposit (more than 20 %)

What to do if you’ve been scammed

  1. Report to Action Fraud (0300 123 2040) and Trading Standards
  2. Notify your bank — chargebacks can sometimes recover deposits
  3. Contact Citizens Advice for legal options
  4. Don’t pay anything more until the police have looked at it

Prevention

Always use a tradesperson via a vetted network like Checkatrade or MyBuilder — both pre-screen members and offer dispute resolution.
