How to Spot a Rogue Trader (and What to Do)
Most UK tradespeople are honest. But rogue traders cost UK homeowners over £200 million a year — and the elderly are disproportionately targeted.
Warning signs
- Cold-call, door-knock, or pressure tactics (“I noticed your roof from the road…”)
- Cash only, no written quote, no VAT receipt
- Sudden price increases mid-job
- No fixed business address, mobile-only contact
- Refuses to give insurance, accreditation, or references
- Asks for big upfront deposit (more than 20 %)
What to do if you’ve been scammed
- Report to Action Fraud (0300 123 2040) and Trading Standards
- Notify your bank — chargebacks can sometimes recover deposits
- Contact Citizens Advice for legal options
- Don’t pay anything more until the police have looked at it
Prevention
Always use a tradesperson via a vetted network like Checkatrade or MyBuilder — both pre-screen members and offer dispute resolution.
